Coronaviruses are a large group of viruses that are common among animals and humans. The novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19 is a new coronavirus that was not seen in animals or humans before. Typically, human coronaviruses cause mild-to-moderate respiratory illnesses. Symptoms are very similar to the flu:
- Fever
- Cough
- Shortness of breath
- Headache
- Chills
- Sore throat
- Repeated shaking with chills
- New loss of taste or smell
- Muscle pain
In some cases, COVID-19 can cause more severe respiratory illness.
If you develop emergency warning signs for COVID-19 get medical attention immediately. Emergency warning signs include*:
- Trouble breathing
- Bluish lips or face
- Persistent pain or pressure in the chest
- New confusion
- Inability to wake or stay awake
